2012: Part 4

The work kept coming through the summer, easily the busiest we have ever had. One hinge point was certainly BT’s River of Music. We’d been talking to Serious Ltd about the project for a while and Amy Pearce had put together a production team to support the six major stages up and down the Thames. We handled Battersea Park, Trafalgar Square, The Tower of London, Greenwich and London Pleasure Gardens. For a project so long in the making it needed to remain flexible as artistes who had not previously worked together were brought into collaborations. This meant information coming through right up to performance time but produced an event the like of which we have certainly never seen before. It was a privilege to be involved in such a huge event and a delight to be part of its delivery.

Then we got a call from the Royal Opera House, Cara McAleese asked if we would be interested in designing sound for an opera taking place on a barge, with the audience on the towpaths surrounding it. This was part of the Mayors Secret London Festival. Despite being snowed under at the time this was too good to miss and Matt Bridgwater, Xavier D’Arifat and Richard Nowell set sail. Working alongside the ROH2 production team and Joule Events we were made to feel part of the family right from the beginning. We discovered pretty quickly just how good the Shure PSM 1000 and UHF R+ system worked as point to point radio links, which is just as well, given the large areas of water between the band and singers and the audience. The production progressed via the canal system, performing over a period of three weeks at locations from West to East including an amazing performance at Little Venice and ending the Olympic Park’s Live Site.

Jon and Julie from Joule Events are long standing clients, bringing us in to work on a huge range of projects from Shoreditch Festival to Festival Village. They were seated at the same table with Orlando Gough and The Shout when an upgraded version of a production we did as part of  Thames Festival 2011 was discussed. Orlando developed the original performance and took the things we learned to new heights. Scharnhorst 2012 involved three choirs and fifteen percussionists literally playing HMS Belfast. An astonishing event on one of the most iconic sites in London.
